Kazakhstan eyes Chinese and South Korean partners for thermal plant projectsKazakhstan is negotiating with Chinese and South Korean companies to build three thermal power plants (TPPs) after facing delays in securing Russian financing, Deputy Minister of Energy Bakytzhan Ilyas announced Tuesday. The government had initially planned to collaborate with Russia's Inter RAO on constructing 360-megawatt plants in Semey and Ust-Kamenogorsk, plus a 240-megawatt facility originally slated for Kokshetau before being relocated to the Zerendin district. The projects were initially planned to utilize a Russian government loan with subsidized rates."Samruk-Energy is negotiating with other potential contractors that meet modern environmental and efficiency standards," Ilyas said during a public meeting in Astana. "Companies from China and South Korea are among the options being considered."Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar had previously warned Kazakhstan would seek alternative investors if Russia failed to provide equipment financing. The issue was expected to be discussed at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum in late June 2025. (ICE ALMATY)
