Việt Nam officially launched preparations for the 2026 national and local elections with the first meeting of the National Election Council (NEC) on July 9, chaired by NA Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn. The elections, set for March 15, 2026, will select deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026–2031 term. The NEC reviewed and approved draft resolutions on the assignment of duties, sub-committee formation, and working regulations. Emphasising transparency, discipline, and democratic principles, Chairman Mẫn called for thorough legal reviews, personnel standardisation, public engagement, and adoption of IT systems across all election stages. He also highlighted the importance of enhancing deputy quality, managing the effects of recent administrative restructuring, and ensuring the Vietnam Fatherland Front’s supervisory role.
