IRAQ LAUNCHES NAJAF REFINERY EXPANSION PROJECT
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has laid the foundation stone for the expansion of the Najaf [Al-Ashraf] refinery, a strategic project that will increase refining capacity by 70,000 barrels per day.The ceremony, held on Wednesday, marks the start of execution works for the project, which forms part of the government's broader efforts to boost domestic fuel production and achieve self-sufficiency. Work is to be completed within eight months.The event was attended by Deputy Oil Minister for Refining Affairs, Adnan Mohammed Hammoud, and the Governor of Najaf.According to the Ministry of Oil, the expansion will raise the refinery's total production to 100,000 barrels per day. Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul Ghani, has directed that the project be implemented in line with Euro 5 environmental standards, enhancing fuel quality while reducing emissions.The additional capacity is expected to meet real domestic demand and supply power stations, asphalt plants, and cement factories in the central Euphrates provinces with essential fuel products, thus supporting national energy infrastructure and the broader economy.Products will include petrol (20,000 barrels per day), aviation fuel, and liquified petroleum gas (LPG), used in making polypropylene.
