INDONESIA DIVERSIFIES FISH EXPORTS AMID US TARIFF THREAT

Indonesia is working to strengthen its fisheries sector by seeking new market opportunities to reduce dependence on the United States, which currently imposes a 32 percent reciprocal tariff on Indonesian products. Indonesia's Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, emphasized the untapped economic potential of the sector—valued around US$200 billion—but noted that Indonesia’s exports only reach US$5.5 billion, mostly to the US. He pointed to Europe and China as promising alternatives, stressing the need for strategic expansion to protect economic interests. Additionally, Trenggono called for improved marine spatial planning to ensure sustainable, inclusive growth that aligns with environmental conditions and local community needs. Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto announced that the implementation of the US tariff has been postponed following recent negotiations. President Trump’s original plan to enforce the 32 percent import tariff starting August 1, 2025, is now on hold to allow further diplomatic discussions. This decision came after Hartarto met with top US trade officials in Washington, D.C., where both sides agreed to continue processing Indonesia’s proposal over the next few weeks, offering Indonesia a window to seek more favorable trade terms.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/366481/indonesia-targets-new-fish-markets-to-counter-us-tariff-threat (ICE GIACARTA)
