U.S. IMPOSES 19% TARIFF ON INDONESIAN IMPORTS UNDER REVISED TRADE DEAL
U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new trade agreement with Indonesia that includes a 19 percent tariff on Indonesian goods—lower than the previously threatened 32 percent. In exchange, Indonesia committed to significant purchases totaling US$15 billion in U.S. energy, US$4.5 billion in agricultural products, and 50 Boeing jets. Although specific timelines for these purchases and tariff implementations remain unclear, the pact was hailed by Trump as beneficial for all parties. The announcement comes amid growing pressure on the Trump administration to finalize trade deals with various nations to avoid imposing steep tariffs. The trade pact with Indonesia follows Trump's broader strategy of applying reciprocal tariffs to address perceived unfair trade practices. Earlier in April, Trump introduced a 10 percent tariff on most trading partners and threatened increases for countries including Indonesia and the EU. While the tariff increases were postponed twice, letters outlining new tariff levels have been sent to more than 20 countries. Analysts warn that without concrete agreements, public perception may view Trump's tariff-centric trade strategy as flawed. Nonetheless, Indonesian officials expressed optimism about the new deal, suggesting it aligns with their economic interests.Source: https://www.thejakartapost.com/business/2025/07/16/trump-says-indonesia-to-face-19-percent-tariff-under-trade-deal.html (ICE GIACARTA)
