INDONESIA PUSHES NICKEL-BASED BATTERIES IN EV PRODUCTION
Indonesia's Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Kartika Wirjoatmodjo, is urging regulatory support to shift Indonesia’s EV battery production from lithium-based to nickel-based technologies, citing the country’s rich nickel reserves and strategic potential. Speaking at the 2025 International Battery Summit, he emphasized the need for incentives and cross-ministerial collaboration to encourage manufacturers to adopt nickel-based systems. He highlighted ongoing SOE partnerships with global firms like CATL and Huayou, and stressed the importance of midstream investment to strengthen Indonesia’s role in the global battery supply chain, which is projected to reach 8,800 GWh by 2040. A major step in this direction is the ANTAM-IBC-CBL consortium’s integrated EV battery ecosystem project, inaugurated by President Prabowo in Karawang on June 29, 2025. As part of the National Strategic Project (PSN), the $5.9 billion initiative spans 3,023 hectares and includes six subprojects—five in East Halmahera and one in Karawang. It aims to create up to 8,000 jobs and develop 18 infrastructure projects, including a multi-function dock. The project’s energy mix includes coal, gas, waste heat, and solar power, with 172 MWp of solar capacity, supporting Indonesia’s ambition to become a key player in the global EV battery industry.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/371305/indonesia-pushes-nickel-based-batteries-in-ev-production (ICE GIACARTA)
