TANZANIA PM PROMOTES AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT ACCESS AMID TZS 6.2 TRILLION SALES
Dar Es Salaam – Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has urged the Ministry of Agriculture to establish a framework to provide agricultural institutions with access to modern farming equipment, a move aimed at increasing productivity and transforming Tanzania's agricultural sector, local media reported.Speaking at the Agricultural International Expo 2025 in Dodoma, Majaliwa said the African country's agricultural institutions could significantly improve yields if equipped with modern technologies. He proposed that the Ministry of Agriculture consider offering machinery on credit to facilitate accessibility, given the high cost of modern planting, harvesting, and irrigation equipment."If the ministry provides a structured means of access, including through loans, institutions will be able to produce efficiently," the prime minister said, specifying that during the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 agricultural seasons, agricultural inputs worth 1 trillion Tanzanian shillings (approximately $399.5 million) were distributed to farmers and 3.8 million tons of produce worth 6.2 trillion Tanzanian shillings were sold through cooperatives. "These successes underscore the power of the cooperative model in promoting agriculture and improving livelihoods." According to the Tanzanian government, public awareness of the role and historical importance of cooperatives should be increased. (ICE NAIROBI)
