AFRICA SEEKS RESILIENCE IN FACE OF US TARIFF HIKES

The U.S. has imposed new tariffs on nearly 70 countries, including 20 in Africa, with rates up to 30%, following an executive order by President Trump. This move has triggered concern among African officials and experts, who warn it threatens development and highlights the need for a coordinated response. In countries like Lesotho and Madagascar, key export industries such as textiles and vanilla are already suffering. Lesotho's garment sector faces mass layoffs, while Madagascar's vanilla industry risks further price declines. Ethiopia’s coffee exports could also be severely impacted, potentially losing 35% of revenue. In response, African nations are turning inward and diversifying trade. Experts stress the importance of regional integration through mechanisms like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which can reduce dependence on volatile global markets. Countries like Tanzania are already increasing regional exports, while others are strengthening ties with non-Western partners.China's decision to grant zero-tariff access to African exports has been welcomed as a major opportunity. Experts and business leaders across the continent see it as a pathway to boost industrial competitiveness, diversify markets, and strengthen economic resilience amid shifting global trade dynamics.
