INDONESIA'S EXPORT PROSPECTS AFTER THE U.S. TARIFFS TAKE EFFECT AUGUST 7
Indonesia faces new challenges in its export performance following the United States’ decision to impose a 19% import tariff on Indonesian goods, while exempting US exports from duties. Although Indonesia’s exports grew 7.7% in the first half of 2025, economists warn that the tariff could dampen demand from US consumers due to rising prices. Minister Bahlil Lahadalia and experts like Wijayanto Samirin acknowledge the potential short-term decline in exports to the US, but also see strategic opportunities—Indonesia’s tariff rate remains lower than those imposed on China and India, and comparable to ASEAN peers. The government is urged to negotiate lower tariffs for more products, diversify export markets, and strengthen domestic competitiveness to mitigate the impact. Despite concerns, Indonesia’s trade surplus with the US remains strong, reaching US$9.92 billion in the first half of 2025, indicating continued competitiveness of Indonesian products. Indonesia's Ministry of Trade plans to closely monitor this surplus and maintain export momentum amid the tariff shift. Economists like Andry Satrio Nugroho emphasize the importance of expanding exports to non-US markets, particularly China and the European Union, to reduce dependency and buffer against unpredictable US policy changes. Besides the US, Budi said that Indonesia's trade balance surplus in the first half of 2025 also came from India worth US$6.64 billion, the Philippines US$4.36 billion, Malaysia US$3.07 billion, and Vietnam US$2.21 billion. Meanwhile, looking at regional countries, Budi stated that Indonesia's trade surplus came from the ASEAN region, reaching US$9.59 billion. This was followed by the European Union and the EAEU, with surpluses of US$3.79 billion and US$0.007 billion, respectively, in the first half of 2025.Source: https://ekonomi.bisnis.com/read/20250807/12/1899757/prospek-ekspor-indonesia-pasca-tarif-trump-berlaku-7-agustus (ICE GIACARTA)
