INDONESIA APPROVES SITE FOR FIRST NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN BANGKA BELITUNG
Indonesia has taken a major step toward establishing its first nuclear power plant, with the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten) approving the site evaluation for the ThorCon 500 PLTN on Kelasa Island, Bangka Belitung. The evaluation request, submitted by PT Thorcon Power Indonesia (PT TPI) in January 2025, was completed ahead of schedule in just 126 working days. The approval, formalized through Bapeten Decree No. 00003.556.1.300725, allows PT TPI to proceed with detailed site assessments under its Site Evaluation Program (PET) and Site Evaluation Management System (SMET), focusing on seismic, volcanic, meteorological, and other safety-related factors. This milestone coincides with a joint feasibility study launched by PLN Nusantara Power and ThorCon International, following an MoU signed in July 2025. The study aims to evaluate reactor technology, safety protocols, financial viability, and collaboration models, reinforcing Indonesia’s commitment to low-carbon, reliable energy. Both parties expressed optimism about the project’s potential to enhance national energy resilience and position Indonesia as a leader in safe nuclear energy adoption.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/4948/energy-and-resources/indonesia-moves-closer-to-1st-nuclear-power-plant-approved-site-in-bangka-belitung (ICE GIACARTA)
