FORD OUTLINES A THREE-TIER PLAN FOR TUNNEL UNDER THE 401

At a news conference in Thornhill, Ontario, Premier Doug Ford unveiled his plan for a tunnel under Highway 401 to alleviate congestion and improve traffic in the Toronto area.Highway 401 is the busiest highway in North America, according to the Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT) report by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO).Ford’s plan includes a three-tiered tunnel built from Mississauga in the west to Scarborough and could cost up to $100 billion, according to CBC News. “We’re going to make it 19.5 metres. No one’s ever done that. We’re going to have one lane going east, one lane going west, and the bottom part is going to be transit,” said Ford. A Global News report found that Ford’s plan was halted in 2021, due to a “potential for roadway collapse,” and “pose risks to public safety.”However, Ford argues, the project can be done safely and is the best approach to remove congestion. A study funded by the Ontario Road Builders Association (ORBA) found traffic congestion costs Ontario $56 billion annually, with the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area accounting for $44.7 billion.Steve Crombie, senior director of public affairs, ORBA, explains that ORBA participated in some of the feasibility consultations that occurred earlier this year.“We are very engaged and invested in this project,” says Crombie. “The 401 congestion isn’t just a nuance, but a major economic, environmental and productivity issue.” ORBA members stand ready to deliver the critical transportation projects that will strengthen our economy and improve the quality of life for all Ontarians, states ORBA in a media release.  (ICE TORONTO)
