KAZAKHSTAN-FOOD-SELF/SUFFICIENCY
Kazakhstan aims for full self-sufficiency in staple foods by 2028Kazakhstan plans to achieve full self-sufficiency in staple food products by 2028, the government’s press service said in a Tuesday statement. The plans were discussed during a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy Serik Zhumangarin."Kazakhstan already meets 80-100% or more of its domestic demand for staple foods. Meat, milk, eggs, vegetables and flour are produced in sufficient quantities to meet the needs of our population. However, imports still include poultry meat, sausages, cheeses, sugar and fish," Deputy Minister of Agriculture Yermek Kenjekhanuly said at the meeting.First Deputy Minister of Trade and Integration Aizhan Bizhanova noted that prices for most essential food products in Kazakhstan remain the lowest in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)."For 15 food products—including sunflower oil, cottage cheese, eggs, salt, buckwheat, rice, flour, and vegetables—Kazakhstan has the lowest market prices among EAEU countries. In milk and beef, Kazakhstan is second only to Belarus, while in chicken, it trails Belarus and Russia, and in butter, it follows Kyrgyzstan," Bizhanova stated. (ICE ALMATY)
