WHY COFFEE PRICES ARE SO HIGH — AND WHERE THEY’RE HEADED NEXT
Coffee prices ebb and flow according to supply and demand, as they do for other commodities, which is why ground roast coffee prices in the U.S. hit $8.41 per pound in July, up a whopping 33% from a year ago. U.S. prices for all coffee varieties (including roasted and instant coffee) were up 14.5% year-on-year in July — the second-highest annual inflation rate for any CPI category behind eggs. Globally, coffee prices are still hovering near a fifty-year high reached in February. Most of this can be explained by extreme weather in major producers like Brazil and Vietnam, which crimped supply temporarily. Even with the President's new 50% tariff on Brazil (which provides 32% of U.S. coffee), coffee prices are expected to continue fluctuating, as has been the case historically.
