HCM CITY SEEKS SOLUTIONS FOR EFFECTIVE USE OF TÂN SƠN NHẤT, LONG THÀNH AIRPORTS
HCM CITY — Policymakers and experts are exploring strategies to optimise coordination between Tân Sơn Nhất and Long Thành international airports, aiming to strengthen HCM City’s role as Việt Nam’s aviation gateway and a future regional transit hub. At a workshop hosted by the Việt Nam Aviation Academy, speakers stressed that Long Thành, designed for 100 million passengers annually, must be integrated into a “dual-port system” with Tân Sơn Nhất to maximise efficiency and sustainability. Consultants from the Incheon Airport Consortium proposed concentrating international flights at Long Thành to streamline operations, though they warned that dividing flights between the two airports could create confusion and reduce competitiveness. Key concerns centre on connectivity. Long Thành’s access relies on the congested National Highway 51 and HCM City–Long Thành expressway, with experts urging accelerated investment in expressways, inter-regional routes, and rail links. Some suggested moving all cargo operations to Long Thành first to ease pressure on Tân Sơn Nhất while gradually shifting passenger flights as infrastructure improves. The Civil Aviation Authority of Việt Nam confirmed Long Thành as a flagship project, essential for integration into Asia–Pacific aviation networks. Officials underscored the need for a clear transitional roadmap to ensure both airports operate in parallel safely, efficiently, and sustainably. — VNS (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
