INDONESIA TIGHTENS IMPORT RULES AFTER RADIOACTIVE SHRIMP SCAREC

Indonesia is tightening import regulations following the detection of Cesium-137 contamination in shrimp exports, with nine out of 14 containers from the Philippines testing positive at Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok Port. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan emphasized stricter controls on goods linked to waste, especially scrap metal. The contaminated containers will be re-exported, and authorities have sealed the PT PMTI facility in Banten, suspected as a contamination source, pending decontamination. The Health Ministry has initiated medical checks on nearby communities for potential exposure. The incident gained international attention after US customs flagged Cs-137 in shipments from Indonesia at major ports including Los Angeles and Miami, prompting FDA scrutiny. While no radioactive shrimp products have entered US markets, contamination is suspected to have occurred during packaging or storage. The case underscores Indonesia’s vulnerability in global supply chains and has prompted swift regulatory and health responses to safeguard public safety and restore confidence in its export standards.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/379621/indonesia-tightens-import-rules-after-radioactive-shrimp-scare (ICE GIACARTA)
