Kazakhstan to transfer over 450 state-owned firms to private sectorKazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokaev has approved a plan to transfer more than 450 state-owned enterprises to the private sector as part of the country's economic liberalization efforts, his office said Thursday.The move, developed with the National Privatization Office, aims to reduce the state's role in the economy and increase competition, according to Marat Omarov, chairman of the Agency for Protection and Development of Competition.Omarov also reported that exchange activities have been brought into compliance with legislation and modern market trading conditions as part of efforts to develop competition in key commodity markets. "Only three commodity exchanges remain operational today, compared to 22 when the agency initially assumed regulatory control over this sector," according to the press release.Tokaev issued additional instructions to develop competition in key economic sectors and protect the interests of small and medium-sized businesses.
