KAZAKHSTAN-NUCLEAR-ENERGY-TRANSITION
Kazakhstan views nuclear energy as foundation for carbon neutrality by 2060 - Agency ChairKazakhstan considers nuclear power a key element of its transition to carbon neutrality by 2060, the chairman of the Atomic Energy Agency, Almasadam Satkaliyev, said."Nuclear power is not only a reliable source of energy but also a strategic tool in the fight against climate change. Kazakhstan has set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, and nuclear energy will play a key role in this transition," Satkaliyev said while speaking at the 69th IAEA General Conference in Vienna. He noted that a specialized agency has been established to develop the sector, and a strategy for the nuclear industry's development is being formulated. This strategy includes the construction of nuclear power plants. Satkaliyev also highlighted that the IAEA Low Enriched Uranium Bank is located on Kazakh territory."Kazakhstan is building its nuclear policy based on IAEA international standards, developing transparency and international cooperation. The peaceful atom is part of our national future and our contribution to the shared future of humanity—a future that is safe, clean, and free of nuclear weapons," he said. The nation envisions three nuclear power plants as part of a nuclear cluster project. The first plant, near Lake Balkhash, is to be built by Russia's Rosatom. Specialists began drilling the first exploratory well and collecting soil samples at the site near the village of Ulken in August 2025. The government has stated that the second and third plants could be constructed by the Chinese corporation China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC). (ICE ALMATY)
