Only 12% of republican roads meet safety requirements - Kazakh Interior MinistryIn Kazakhstan, only 12% of republican roads meet safety requirements, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Igor Lepekha said."Road infrastructure, amid the growth of motor transport and transit through the country, is still underdeveloped. Today, only 12% of republican roads meet safety requirements. The construction of over 6,000 kilometers of roads with four or more lanes is required," Lepekha said at a government meeting on Monday. He noted that there are also issues with the condition of the roads. This refers to potholes, cracks, lighting, and the lack of markings and signs."Therefore, we conduct daily inspections and issue orders to akimats  and road organizations. As a result, thousands of kilometers of barriers, 500 traffic lights, 11,000 signs, and 260 regulated pedestrian crossings have been installed. About 5,000 officials have been held accountable for failing to comply with orders," Lepekha said.According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan, more than 2,000 people die in road accidents in the country every year, and over 20,000 are injured.
