Uzbek president unveils strategy to combat poverty Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev presented a strategy aimed at fighting poverty and maintaining sustainable development in the country at the From Poverty to Prosperity International Forum in Namangan."The From Poverty to Prosperity program covers seven key areas," Mirziyoyev said. The text of his speech was circulated by the presidential press service on Thursday.First of all, the strategy will focus not only on employment but on creating stable and high-income jobs, he said. More than 9,000 new enterprises and around 300,000 work places are being created in 2025 through $35-billion investment projects, the president said, noting the growing role of entrepreneurs who assume social responsibility.Mirziyoyev also said in his speech that education is key to eradicating poverty."We have trained in various professions and provided jobs to more than 800,000 citizens over the past five years alone. Work is ongoing to ensure that children from low-income families have access to pre-school education. Vocational training centers will be opened as part of international cooperation," he said.Large-scale measures are being taken in Uzbekistan to enhance women's role in the economy, Mirziyoyev said. As many as 50,000 women will receive IT and artificial intelligence training as part of the Girls of the Digital Generation program. There are also plans to expand the social insurance system.The program will also help tackle problems in healthcare and social protection, Mirziyoyev said. Specifically, doctors were assigned to 140,000 poor families and their annual checkups have been organized this year. A $100-million project is being implemented with the World Bank. A total of 150,000 people with disabilities have been provided with jobs this year.As regards infrastructure development, the authorities plan to implement projects worth $1.3 billion in the country's regions in 2026. In addition, $200 million will be allocated for mortgage subsidies for citizens in need every year.Mirziyoyev said at the end of his speech that the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals program accounts for more than 70% of Uzbekistan's public expenditures. When commenting on the need to secure financial resources and improve their efficiency, the president proposed holding an international conference in Khiva in 2026 to develop a new global financial architecture for combating poverty.
