Kazakhstan aims to rank among world's top three sunflower oil suppliers by 2028Kazakhstan plans to rank among the top three global suppliers of sunflower oil by 2028, Minister of Trade and Integration Arman Shakkaliyev announced Tuesday."By 2028, we plan to achieve an annual turnover of over $1 billion for the vegetable oil industry, to rank among the world's top three sunflower oil suppliers," Shakkaliyev said Tuesday at a government meeting.The ministry is developing a roadmap for the sector's development for 2026-2028 in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Association of Oilseed Processors."The objective is to elevate the oilseed sector to a new level by increasing production and capacity utilization," Shakkaliyev said.Kazakhstan produced 523,900 tonnes of sunflower oil in January-August 2025, a 27.2% increase compared to the same period last year, according to industry data. Sunflower oil accounted for 88% of the country's total vegetable oil production, which reached 594,900 tonnes.The significant growth follows a major expansion of oilseed cultivation area, which reached 4 million hectares in 2025, including 1.7 million hectares of sunflowers, up from 2.9 million hectares in 2024.The northern regions of North Kazakhstan (23.3%) and Kostanay (23%) account for the largest shares of the total oilseed acreage, followed by Pavlodar (12.5%), Abai (10.2%), Akmola (9.2%), and East Kazakhstan (7.7%).The increased planting contributed to a record harvest of 3.3 million tonnes of oilseeds in 2024, a 57% increase over 2023. As of September 18 this year, 435,000 tonnes of oilseeds have been harvested.The country's processing capacity is supported by 88 oilseed crushing plants with a total annual capacity of up to 4.7 million tonnes of raw materials.
