KYRGYZSTAN-NPP-ROSATOM

Kyrgyzstan considering building NPP, no fundamental decision yet - Kyrgyz Energy MinistryKyrgyzstan, jointly with Rosatom, is still studying the construction of a nuclear power plant, Kyrgyz Deputy Energy Minister Altynbek Rysbekov said at the World Atomic Week 2025 forum on Thursday. The parties are exploring in which areas an NPP may be built, what capacity it should have, he said. Additionally, study tours were arranged, and Kyrgyz delegations visited the operating nuclear power plants several times to study their operations."This is done so that they [representatives of the delegations] will be able to explain everything to the public then. I think this is the most important factor for building a nuclear power plant - to explain to the population so that they [citizens] also understand correctly that there are no problems for the population with the construction of a nuclear power plant," Rysbekov said.At the same time, in response to clarifying questions from journalists, he said that there is no final decision on the construction of the NPP itself, nor on its cost, location or the beginning of construction work as of yet."A nuclear power plant is a matter in which we cannot immediately say how it will be. It is too early to say in which specific area it may be built. Currently, work is underway only on how to build an NPP in Kyrgyzstan. There is a possibility of building a plant, but no fundamental decision has been made yet. Indeed, we have signed a memorandum with Rosatom, and we have it. Some work is underway, but the matters of where and how it will be built have not yet been determined; it is still too early," Rysbekov said.Kyrgyzstan and Rosatom signed a memorandum on the construction of a low-power nuclear power plant on the sidelines of the Expo 2020 World Exhibition in Dubai in early 2022. It was first expected to be one or two lower-power nuclear plants with one or two RITM-200N nuclear power units of 55 MW each.In the spring of this year, Rosatom said that it had submitted to the Kyrgyz Energy Ministry a preliminary feasibility study to build a low-power nuclear power plant.
