PHARMACEUTICAL FIRMS IN SINGAPORE CLARIFYING TARIFF EXEMPTION ELIGIBILITY, MANY

SINGAPORE: Many pharmaceutical companies in Singapore already have plans to invest in the United States and are clarifying with the US administration if they will be exempted from the tariffs, said Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong on Saturday (Sep 27). “The tariffs may not have immediate impact on their exports given that they already have plans to build capacity in the United States,” he added. Companies that are building manufacturing plants in the US will be exempted from the new tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump on Thursday. On Thursday, Trump said the US will impose a 100 per cent tariff on any branded or patented pharmaceutical product “unless a company is building their pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in America”. The new tariffs on pharmaceuticals, big-rig trucks, home renovation fixtures and furniture are set to take effect from Oct 1. Following Trump’s announcement, the Singapore government reached out to pharmaceutical companies here and confirmed that many of them already have plans to invest in the US and build new capacity there, said Mr Gan.   https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/pharmaceutical-tariffs-singapore-gan-kim-yong-exemptions-trump-5373 (ICE SINGAPORE)
