KAZAKHSTAN-PRESIDENT-AI-UNEMPLOYMENT

Kazakh president warns of social risks from AI-driven job lossesPresident Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has warned of serious social risks from mass automation, stressing that Kazakhstan must act now to prepare its workforce for the transformation of the labor market."Today we see the labor market changing, with many professions already being automated. This will inevitably make a number of jobs obsolete, leaving many people without work. If we fail to address this issue now, the social consequences will be severe," Tokayev said Wednesday at the inaugural meeting of the AI Council.Tokayev noted that artificial intelligence could also be a powerful tool for adaptation, pointing out that smart technologies can assess employees’ strengths and weaknesses and recommend tailored pathways for professional development."We need to get ahead of the curve by expanding opportunities for retraining and upskilling. There is no need to waste millions from the budget on cumbersome retraining centers. Instead, we must use AI intelligently," the president said.He stressed that AI’s potential should be directed toward creating new jobs, strengthening human capital, and driving socio-economic growth. Tokayev instructed the government to develop a national AI-based online platform.Earlier reports estimated that AI could displace more than 1 million workers in Kazakhstan. (ICE ALMATY)
