INDONESIA'S COAL EXPORTS DOWN NEARLY 21% AMID PRICE SLUMP

Indonesia’s coal exports have experienced a sharp decline in 2025, dropping nearly 21 percent year-on-year as of August due to falling global prices. The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that coal export revenues fell from US$20.13 billion in the same period last year to US$15.91 billion, with export volumes also decreasing from 264.78 million tons to 251.13 million tons. The average price per ton dropped from US$76.14 to US$63.48, and coal accounted for 9.03 percent of Indonesia’s non-oil and gas exports. Global coal prices saw a 0.66 percent monthly decline in August, marking a 23.06 percent drop compared to the previous year. Despite the downturn, China and India remain key buyers of Indonesian coal, purchasing US$5.91 billion and US$3.69 billion worth of mineral fuels respectively between January and August. However, domestic challenges have compounded the export slump, as 190 coal miners faced suspension for failing to meet reclamation and post-mining obligations. Indonesia mandates that miners allocate funds to restore land affected by their operations, and the government has so far collected IDR35 trillion (approximately US$2.1 billion) for these purposes.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesias-coal-exports-down-nearly-21-amid-price-slump (ICE GIACARTA)
