TANZANIA IS ON THE VERGE OF A HISTORIC ENERGY BREAKTHROUGH WITH THE $42 BILLION
Tanzania is on the verge of a historic energy breakthrough with the $42 billion Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project in Lindi, expected to be finalized by 2025 and operational by 2030. Partnering with Shell and Equinor, the project will produce up to 10 million tonnes of LNG annually, positioning Tanzania as a key regional energy hub. Beyond its scale, the project promises to transform the long-overlooked southern regions—Lindi and Mtwara—by creating jobs, boosting industries, supporting agriculture, and anchoring government revenues. With LNG supplying cleaner and more affordable energy, the initiative is expected to ease environmental pressure, lower industrial costs, and attract new investment. Crucially, LNG’s impact is magnified when combined with the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which will connect southern gas fields and agricultural zones to both domestic and international markets. Together, these catalytic projects could shift Tanzania’s economic balance away from Dar es Salaam and the northern corridor, unlocking the South as a new powerhouse. If managed with transparency, fair revenue-sharing, and community participation, LNG can help Tanzania realize its Vision 2050 goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy—proving that the nation’s future growth will not be built in Dar alone, but through the long-neglected southern regions finally taking center stage.
