METRO MANILA WASTE EYED FOR GREEN POWER PROJECTS
THE government is looking to turn the trash generated by Metro Manila and other metropolises into electricity, with the Department of Energy (DOE) on Thursday announcing a special auction round next year for waste-to-energy (WTE) projects. The auction will be part of the ongoing green energy auction (GEA) program, and the notice and terms of reference will be released later this month, the DOE said. The auction round for WTE projects that source feedstock from within Metro Manila and other highly urbanized cities (HUCs) is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2027, it added. The DOE noted that, based on National Solid Waste Management Commission data as of last year, Metro Manila and HUCs generate an estimated 6.12 million metric tons of municipal solid waste, equivalent to 335 megawatts of baseload capacity. "Interested parties will be given sufficient time to comply with the GEA registration requirements prior to the auction proper in January 2026," it said. https://www.manilatimes.net/2025/10/10/business/top-business/metro-manila-waste-eyed-for-green-power-projects/2197775 (ICE SINGAPORE)
