VIỆT NAM SURGES INTO BATTERY-SWAPPING FOR E-SCOOTERS
Việt Nam is witnessing a surge of investment in battery-swapping networks for electric motorbikes, signalling a multibillion-dollar opportunity as the country accelerates its green mobility transition. In early October, LG Energy Solution (LG ENSOL) began working with Hà Nội authorities to develop a smart battery-swapping network serving 100,000 electric scooters, featuring AI-powered systems managed from Hòa Lạc Hi-Tech Park. Once operational, LG ENSOL plans to build a battery production plant in Hà Nội. Domestic players are also expanding rapidly. Selex Motors aims for 3,000 swap cabinets nationwide by 2028, while TMT-EGREEN and Honda Vietnam have launched similar services. V-Green, under Vingroup, plans to deploy 150,000 swapping cabinets, partnering with retail chains and adopting a franchise model to attract private investment. The market potential is vast: replacing 80 million petrol motorbikes could require 500,000 swapping stations and 300 million batteries, at a cost of billions of dollars. Analysts note that swapping is faster than charging — under two minutes — making it ideal for ride-hailing and delivery services. With low-emission zones (LEZs) planned in Hà Nội and HCM City by 2026, and incentives for EV buyers and companies, battery swapping is set to play a crucial role in Việt Nam’s electric mobility ecosystem. — VNS (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
