INDONESIA PUSHES COAL DOWNSTREAMING TO REPLACE LPG IMPORTS

The Indonesian government is aggressively pursuing a coal downstreaming project to convert low-calorie coal into Dimethyl Ether (DME), which will serve as a substitute for LPG. Minister Bahlil Lahadalia highlighted the urgent need, noting Indonesia imports up to 7 million tons of LPG annually. This initiative, supported by the new Government Regulation (PP) No. 40 of 2025, aims for energy self-sufficiency and follows the successful nickel hilirisasi (downstreaming) program that boosted exports tenfold. Indonesia plans to utilize DME, targeting 600,000 tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE) by 2030 and significantly phasing out LPG consumption by 2060.source: https://www.cnbcindonesia.com/news/20251016072235-4-676250/pemerintah-siapkan-proyek-pengganti-lpg (ICE GIACARTA)
