ESCWA: POVERTY IN JORDAN DECLINES BY 4.7% OVER THREE DECADES

A recent international report revealed that poverty rates in Jordan have declined by 4.7% over the past 30 years. According to the report “World Poverty in Wider Perspective,” issued by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Jordan’s poverty rate stood at 21.4% at the end of last year, compared to 26.1% in 1995, Al-Ghad reported. The report noted that Jordan’s current poverty rate is below the Arab regional average of 34%. It also classified poverty in Jordan as “moderate”—the third level of poverty—less severe than “destitute” and “extreme” poverty categories. (ICE AMMAN)
