IRAQ LAUNCHES NATIONAL HOUSING POLICY 2025-2030
The Government of Iraq, with support from the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and funding from the European Union (EU), has launched the National Housing Policy (NHP) 2025-2030, providing a comprehensive framework to address the country's housing challenges and promote equitable, sustainable urban development.Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa Al-Sudani praised the collaborative effort behind the policy, commending the Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Public Municipalities and international partners for developing a national framework that ensures every Iraqi's right to adequate, safe, and dignified housing.Under the leadership of Minister Bangen Rekani, the NHP sets out programmes to deliver affordable housing, enhance infrastructure, promote sustainable construction, and strengthen institutional coordination between government, communities, and the private sector. The policy was developed as part of the EU-funded Building Equitable and Inclusive Transformation (BEIT) programme, implemented by UN-Habitat in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Trade Centre (ITC).EU Chargé d'Affaires Adam Janssen said the initiative reflects Iraq's shift towards long-term sustainable growth, while UN-Habitat Regional Director Rania Hedeya described it as a model for linking housing to climate action, economic opportunity, and social stability. UN Deputy Special Representative Ghulam Isaczai emphasised that the policy places people and inclusivity at the centre of Iraq's national development vision. (ICE AMMAN)
