PM LAUNCHES $500M PHARMA CITY PROJECT IN BAGHDAD
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has laid the foundation stone for the Medical Health City project in southern Baghdad, covering an area of 120,000 m². The launch ceremony was attended by the Minister of Health and representatives of international pharmaceutical companies.The project includes five pharmaceutical factories with a total investment exceeding $500 million, developed in partnership with major global firms:A biosimilar medicines plant with Hetero (India).A plasma derivatives plant with Accord (UK subsidiary of Indian pharmaceutical company Intas Pharmaceuticals) and Prothya (Netherlands).A peritoneal dialysis solutions plant with Vantive (formerly the kidney care unit of Baxter, which was sold to Carlyle) (US).A pharmaceutical production facility in cooperation with international partners.A medical textiles and disposables factory.Supporting projects include a pharmaceutical research and development centre in partnership with Sartorius (Germany), temperature-controlled and sterilised medical warehouses, and solar-powered energy stations.From the Medical Health City site, Al-Sudani also inaugurated three peritoneal dialysis centres in Baghdad, Nineveh, and Erbil via video link.Additionally, three memorandums of principles were signed with Accord (UK), Abbott (US), and Sartorius (Germany), focusing on biotechnology medicines for cancer and immune diseases, plasma-based therapies, and R&D cooperation.Al-Sudani described the project as one of Iraq's largest strategic healthcare industry initiatives, designed to localise pharmaceutical manufacturing, attract global technology, and enhance access to advanced treatments for chronic and life-threatening diseases.He reaffirmed the government's full support for both the Ministry of Health and the private sector, stressing that pharmaceutical security is as vital as food and military security.
