Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan to complete Trans-Caspian fiber-optic cable by 2027Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan plan to complete a fiber-optic cable across the Caspian Sea by 2027, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said Friday."One of our key infrastructure projects is the submarine fiber-optic cable across the Caspian Sea between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan," Aliyev told the Kazinform news agency ahead of his state visit to Kazakhstan. "The construction agreement, signed in Baku in March 2025, sets completion for late 2026 and will significantly boost digital integration between our nations," he said.Ahead of his state visit to Kazakhstan, Aliyev told the Kazinform news agency that bilateral trade reached $547 million in January-August 2025 and was more than triple the same period in 2024. He credited the growth to the Middle Corridor trade route and infrastructure upgrades.The president also noted strengthening investment ties, with $225 million of Azerbaijani investment in Kazakhstan and $136 million of Kazakh investment in Azerbaijan. Transit shipments between the countries grew 20% in 2024 to over 3.5 million tonnes.Aliyev said both nations are modernizing port infrastructure at Aktau and Alyat to enhance the Middle Corridor linking Europe and Asia. He also highlighted cooperation in green energy, citing 2024 agreements with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to connect energy systems and develop renewables.The Trans-Caspian Fiber-Optic Cable will stretch 380 kilometers (236 miles) between Sumgait, Azerbaijan and Aktau, Kazakhstan. With a planned capacity of 400 terabits per second, the underwater line will handle large data volumes and boost digital connectivity. (ICE ALMATY)
