HCM CITY SETS SIGHTS ON BECOMING MAJOR SERVICES HUB OF THE COUNTRY, REGION
HCM City aims to transform itself into a major national and regional services hub, raising the sector’s share to 70–80% of GRDP by focusing on premium, high value-added industries such as finance, logistics, education, healthcare and tourism. The city’s GRDP grew 7.07% in the first nine months of 2025, with services expanding 8.59% and contributing over 60% to overall growth. Following its merger with Bình Dương and Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu, the city is restructuring its economy: the former HCM City as a financial and commercial centre, Bình Dương as an industrial and logistics base, and Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu as a port and tourism hub. Experts recommend focusing on two key service clusters — productivity enhancement and global connectivity — through technological innovation, digital transformation, fintech sandboxes, and workforce development. The digital economy currently contributes 20% of GRDP and is expected to expand with stronger infrastructure and e-payments. The city also plans to develop eight major logistics hubs, complete ring roads and metro lines, and build the HCM City International Financial Centre. Economists stress the need for domestic premium service brands and faster policy implementation to ensure local firms compete effectively with foreign players. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
