ERG to build hot-briquetted iron plant in Rudny with Austria's Primetals and US's Midrex investing 650 bln tengeEurasian Resources Group (ERG) has signed a strategic contract with a consortium comprising Primetals Technologies Austria GmbH (Austria) and Midrex Technologies Inc. (USA) for the construction of a hot-briquetted iron (HBI) plant in the city of Rudny in the Kostanay region of northern Kazakhstan, the ERG press service reported.The investment volume is over 650 billion tenge.The HBI plant construction project is being implemented by ERG's subsidiary - QazIron ERG LLP. The production capacity will be 2 million tonnes of HBI per year, with a product metallization rate of at least 93% and an iron content of over 90%.The plant’s commissioning is scheduled for 2029.The contract with Primetals and Midrex provides for detailed engineering, supply of main process equipment, and a range of services within the construction project, the statement notes. The signed contract is the next stage of the project implementation, for which the consortium had previously already developed the basic engineering.The MIDREX Flex technology for iron production from ore will reduce the carbon footprint by more than 50% compared to the traditional blast furnace method, the press release says.ERG, established in 2014 on the basis of assets from Eurasian National Resources Corporation (ENRC), is registered in Luxembourg. The company combines ferroalloy, iron ore, aluminum, coal, and power generation enterprises in Kazakhstan, also controls copper and cobalt assets in Africa, and is implementing an iron ore mining project in Brazil. The Sokolov-Sarbai Mining and Processing Production Association (SSGPO) - the largest iron ore mining and processing enterprise in Kazakhstan - is located in Rudny and is part of ERG.Midrex Technologies Inc. supplies direct reduced iron technology.Primetals Technologies Austria GmbH is an international producer of equipment for ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy and a supplier of comprehensive solutions for metallurgical plants.
