KAZAKHSTAN-ECONOMY-ACCIDENT-IMPACT

Kazakhstan acknowledges economic impact from Orenburg plant incidentProduction limits at the Karachaganak field and reduced shipments of Kazakh gas to the Orenburg Gas Processing Plant will inevitably have an economic impact, Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov said on Tuesday.“These restrictions amount to about 9,000 tonnes in lost exports. In addition, there are current limitations on the acceptance of Kazakh gas by the Orenburg plant. This gas is supplied to us from Russia, so the situation does have an economic effect,” Akkenzhenov told reporters. As reported, an emergency situation occurred at the Orenburg GPP on October 19, 2025, following a UAV attack, prompting the plant to temporarily halt acceptance of raw gas from the Karachaganak field.Kazakhstan’s Energy Ministry said the country’s gas supply has not been affected and that gas deliveries to domestic consumers continue as usual. In the early morning of October 19, the governor of the Orenburg region, Yevgeny Solntsev, reported a drone attack on the gas processing plant, which resulted in partial damage to infrastructure and a fire starting in a workshop.Gazprom and KazMunayGas have been cooperating since 2002 within the framework of the joint commercial enterprise KazRosGas. This joint venture was created on a parity basis to purchase gas from the Karachaganak field, process it at the Orenburg GPP, and sell it to consumers in Kazakhstan and Russia.A long-term gas sales agreement for gas from the Karachaganak field was signed between Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V. and KazRosGas in 2007 and was extended until 2038 in 2015 (with a volume of up to 9 billion cubic meters per year). The Karachaganak field is one of the largest in the world. Its oil reserves amount to 1.2 billion tonnes, and gas reserves amount to 1.35 trillion cubic meters. (ICE ALMATY)
