Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan will use RoPax freight-passenger ferries to develop Middle CorridorThe Samruk-Kazyna Fund of Kazakhstan and the Azerbaijani transport and communications holding AZCON have signed a memorandum of cooperation aimed at strengthening partnership in the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), the Samruk-Kazyna press service said."The agreement provides for the possibility of operating new RoPax class ferries in the Caspian Sea, which will be built at the Baku Shipyard," the statement said.It is explained that RoPax class ferries are modern vessels that can simultaneously carry passengers and vehicles (cars, trains, cargo).The document was signed at the Akorda Presidential Palace as part of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's visit to Kazakhstan.Earlier on Tuesday, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said during a briefing following talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart that Astana and Baku plan to create a new Trans-Caspian ferry system for cargo exports.He noted that in 2024, the volume of cargo transportation along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) increased by 62%, to 4.5 million tonnes, and "the indicators for the current year are also encouraging: growth was 2%." In the future, according to Tokayev, it is planned to increase the volume of cargo transportation to 10 million tonnes.The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR, Middle Corridor) runs through China, Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and further to Turkey and European countries.
