Qarmet increases crude steel production by 9% to 2.5 mln tonnes in Jan-AugThe Qarmet steel plant (formerly ArcelorMittal Temirtau) produced over 2.5 million tonnes of crude steel in the first 8 months of 2025, a 9% increase year-over-year, Yerbol Ismailov, Managing Director for Sustainable Development at Qarmet, told Interfax-Kazakhstan news agency."In January-August 2025, the steel department produced 2.525,000 tonnes of crude steel, which represents a 9% growth compared to the same period in 2024," Ismailov said in an interview with Interfax-Kazakhstan.Sales of steel products amounted to 2.260,000 tonnes, also a 9% increase compared to 2024, the managing director said.According to his data, ore production volumes for the specified period amounted to 4.048,000 tonnes, a 13% increase, while coal production reached 4.830,000 tonnes, a 15% increase.Iron concentrate production amounted to 2.359,000 tonnes, which is 20% higher than in 2024. Coal concentrate production was 1.714,000 tonnes, a 9% increase compared to last year.The international concern ArcelorMittal owned the largest Kazakh steel plant, ArcelorMittal Temirtau, since the 1990s. In the second half of 2023, cooperation with it was terminated at the initiative of the Kazakh authorities due to repeated accidents that resulted in worker fatalities. The new investor for the former ArcelorMittal assets (ArcelorMittal Temirtau and a pipe plant in Aktau) became Andrey Lavrentyev, a co-owner of the Kazakh automaker Allur, who bought them for $286 million.
