KAZAKHSTAN-METAL/PLANT-FURNACES-GAS

Qarmet continues switching blast furnaces from coal to gasThe Qarmet metallurgical plant (formerly ArcelorMittal Temirtau) is continuing the process of switching its blast furnaces from coal to gas, the conversion of the final furnace is at its completion stage, Yerbol Ismailov, Managing Director for Sustainable Development at Qarmet, told Interfax-Kazakhstan."The work on switching the enterprise to gas continues. On August 29, 2025, blast furnace No. 2 received natural gas for the first time. On September 30, blast furnace No. 3 received gas. For the plant, this is a new technology associated with changes in technological processes when using natural gas. Specialists are currently working on optimizing gas reception and increasing its consumption," Ismailov said in an interview with Interfax-Kazakhstan."At the moment, three out of four continuous furnaces are in operation, with a gas consumption of about 10,000 cubic meters per hour. Active installation of pipeline systems is underway on the fourth blast furnace, after which, according to plans, all three blast furnaces will run on natural gas," he added. As previously reported, the Qarmet metallurgical plant in Kazakhstan intends to complete the switch to gas for its production in 2025.The international concern ArcelorMittal owned the largest Kazakh metallurgical plant, ArcelorMittal Temirtau, since the 1990s. However, in the second half of 2023, cooperation with it was terminated at the initiative of the authorities due to repeated accidents at the plant, which resulted in the deaths of workers. The new investor for the former ArcelorMittal assets (ArcelorMittal Temirtau and the pipe plant in Aktau) became Andrey Lavrentyev, a co-owner of the Kazakh automaker Allur. According to previously stated figures, the purchase and development of the assets will cost Lavrentyev approximately $4 billion. The full text of the interview is published on the Interfax.kz website.
