INDONESIA REVIVES SPICE LEGACY WITH NORTH MALUKU AS GLOBAL HUB

Indonesia is reviving its historic spice legacy by designating North Maluku as a global spice hub, with Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman outlining a strategic plan centered on plantation downstreaming and industrialization. Speaking in Ternate on Youth Pledge Day, October 28, 2025, Minister Amran emphasized North Maluku’s potential in nutmeg, cloves, and coconut—commodities that once made the region a global trade center. Backed by President Prabowo Subianto’s directive, the government has committed IDR 371 trillion (USD 23 billion) to support strategic plantation development nationwide. As part of this, coconut plantation support in North Maluku has expanded from 10,000 to 15,000 hectares, contributing to a broader initiative projected to create 8.6 million jobs. The minister stressed the importance of value-added processing, noting that Indonesia’s coconut export value could rise from IDR 24 trillion to IDR 2,400 trillion (USD 150 billion) through derivative products like coconut milk and oil. He called for rapid development of nutmeg and clove processing plants to avoid exporting raw materials, which primarily benefit foreign economies. Governor Sherly Tjoanda affirmed full provincial support, pledging to optimize idle lands for factory development to boost productivity and farmer prosperity. The initiative aims to restore Indonesia’s global leadership in spices through innovation, industrial growth, and regional collaboration.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/1932987/indonesia-revives-spice-legacy-with-north-maluku-as-global-hub (ICE GIACARTA)
