CMRL SIGNS CONTRACT WITH FAIVELEY TO IMPLEMENT ADVANCED ANTI-DRAG PASSENGER DOOR SAFETY SYSTEM ACROSS PHASE-1 TRAINS
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has signed a Rs. 48.33-crore contract with Faiveley Transport Rail Technologies India to design and install an advanced Anti-Drag Passenger Door Safety System across 52 Phase-1 trains. This initiative enhances passenger safety, particularly for women commuters, by preventing accidental dragging during door closure.Introduction: Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has taken another major step toward enhancing passenger safety and operational excellence. The organization has signed a new contract for the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of Anti-Drag Features in all saloon doors of 52 trains operating under Phase-1 of the Chennai Metro network. The contract, valued at Rs. 48.33 crores (inclusive of GST), has been awarded to Faiveley Transport Rail Technologies India Private Limited, a leading global name in railway safety and technology solutions. The signing ceremony took place on October 27, 2025, in the presence of Shri Manoj Goyal, Director (Systems & Operations), CMRL). The agreement was officially signed by Shri A. R. Rajendran, Chief General Manager (RS, S&T), CMRL, and Shri Puneet Mehrotra, Senior Director of Faiveley. Senior officials including Shri C. Balamurugan, Additional General Manager (Rolling Stock), and other CMRL staff and contractor representatives attended the event.Enhancing Passenger Safety: Currently, Chennai Metro trains are equipped with automatic sliding doors that detect and prevent obstruction during closure. However, this new Anti-Drag Passenger Door Safety System is an advanced layer of protection designed to detect thinner or flexible objects — such as sarees, bag straps, or belts — that could accidentally get caught between doors. The upgraded system works by monitoring drag or pull forces during train movement. If an object or item is trapped and dragged as the train departs,The system automatically triggers the emergency brake,Sends an instant alert to the train operator through the driver’s console,Allowing immediate response and preventing potential accidents.A Proactive Safety Initiative: While CMRL proudly reports zero incidents of door entrapment, this move underscores its proactive commitment to global safety standards. The Anti-Drag system aims to further reduce even potential risks, particularly for women and elderly passengers, ensuring a secure and confident travel experience.Officials emphasized that passenger safety remains the top priority for CMRL, and such innovations highlight the organization’s continuous focus on adopting modern, technology-driven safety solutions.Future-Ready Implementation: This advanced Anti-Drag feature will not only upgrade existing Phase-1 trains but will also become a standard safety feature in all trains being procured for Phase-2 of the Chennai Metro Rail Project.By incorporating this technology into future expansions, CMRL reinforces its goal of building a safe, efficient, and world-class metro system for Chennai. Conclusion: CMRL’s partnership with Faiveley marks a landmark move toward smarter and safer metro travel in Chennai. The Rs. 48.33-crore Anti-Drag project reflects CMRL’s dedication to innovation and passenger protection, setting a new benchmark in urban transport safety for India’s rapidly growing metro networks.https://railanalysis.in/metro/cmrl-signs-contract-with-faiveley-to-implement-advanced-anti-drag-passenger-door-safety-system-across-phase-1-trains/ (ICE MUMBAI)
