The plan aims to enhance marine services and strengthen cooperation with leading international companies specializing in joint operations, shipbuilding, and the establishment of new shipping routes.According to the ministry's media office, and under the direction of Minister Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, a comprehensive plan is being implemented to modernize the maritime sector through partnerships and investments with global and regional companies. The goal is to lift maritime restrictions on Iraq's fleet and expand its commercial shipping capacity in line with recent progress. The Director General of the General Company for Maritime Transport, Eng. Ahmed Al-Asadi, noted that the opening of new maritime routes with Arab, Asian, and European countries-especially the direct route with China-has significantly increased the number of commercial vessels arriving at Iraqi ports. He added that the ministry has begun receiving offers from specialized companies for joint operations and the provision of various types of vessels to enhance competition in government cargo transport.Al-Asadi confirmed that contracts with international shipbuilding companies are under review by the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers. Once approvals are granted, eight new vessels will be built to expand the national fleet. He also highlighted efforts to activate international agreements governing maritime operations and to deepen cooperation in shipping, logistics, and training of personnel in line with global standards. The ministry further reported that its electronic control centre has improved transparency, streamlined daily operations, automated voyage and cargo management, and reduced costs and delivery times through real-time data and digital systems.Iraq has completed the ratification of more than 30 maritime agreements and protocols, including those related to mandatory inspections. It has also implemented a large part of the International Maritime Organization's requirements through the adoption of modern technologies, electronic management, and the certification of trained maritime personnel for legal and safe service aboard ships.
