INDONESIA CONSIDERS NUCLEAR POWER AS KEY PILLAR FOR NET ZERO EMISSIONS BY 2060

Indonesia is positioning nuclear power as a strategic pillar in its roadmap to achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060, with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) confirming its integration into national energy planning. Deputy Minister Yuliot Tanjung emphasized that nuclear energy is no longer a last-resort option but a core solution for ensuring reliable electricity supply and decarbonizing the power sector. Indonesia’s nuclear journey began in the 1960s with the establishment of three research reactors, and the country now has a robust legal framework supporting nuclear development, including Law No. 10/1967 and recent regulations under the 2025–2045 National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN). The government aims to operate its first nuclear power plant by 2032 and reach a total installed capacity of 44 GW by 2060—35 GW for public electricity and 9 GW for hydrogen production. Nuclear energy is projected to contribute 5% to the national energy mix by 2030 and 11% by 2060. However, challenges remain, particularly in financing and construction timelines, with each plant estimated to cost USD 3.8 billion and require 4–5 years to build. Safety remains paramount, and the government has pledged rigorous oversight and disaster risk mitigation to ensure secure operations in a geologically sensitive region.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/5539/energy-and-resources/indonesia-considers-nuclear-power-as-key-pillar-for-net-zero-emissions-by-2060 (ICE GIACARTA)
