ONTARIO AND CANADA COMMIT $3B TO HELP BUILD G7’S FIRST SMALL MODULAR REACTORS

The Province of Ontario announced it will provide $1 billion through the Building Ontario Fund to the small modular reactor (SMR) project at the Darlington nuclear generating station.“Today’s investment to support the first SMRs in the G7 is a down payment on Ontario’s nuclear energy future,” said Premier Doug Ford. “We’re protecting Ontario by supporting good-paying, long-term jobs for Ontario workers and building the energy infrastructure—including both SMRs and new, large-scale nuclear—needed to make Ontario an energy superpower.”In addition, Prime Minister Carney announced that the Canada Growth Fund will provide $2 billion to support the construction and operation of the four SMRs at the Darlington New Nuclear Project.(Last month, the DNNP was one of several projects referred to Canada’s new Major Projects Office.)AdvertisementThe DNNP aims to make Canada the first in the G7 to have an operational small modular reactor, potentially positioning Canada as a global leader in the deployment of SMR technology.Ontario’s SMRs will create 18,000 jobs during construction and 3,700 jobs during operation, reports the Premier’s Office. Once construction of the four SMRs is complete, they will produce 1,200 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough to power the equivalent of 1.2 million homes.“Capitalizing on big opportunities requires thinking big, acting fast, and making the kinds of generational investments that provide a means to achieve our ambitions—creating jobs, growing our economy, and reducing emissions while lowering long-term energy costs,” said Canada’s Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne.“By supporting Canadian ingenuity and innovation, we are helping pave the way for the use of this technology not only here in Canada but around the world.”AdvertisementThe SMRs that make up the DNNP will inject $500 million annually into the Canadian supply chain, says the province, adding that it has worked with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to ensure that 80% of project spending goes to Ontario companies.
