NEW TECH INNOVATIONS REQUIRED IN BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION

Scientists and conservationists in Việt Nam are calling for stronger use of advanced technologies to enhance biodiversity research, wildlife protection, and forest management. Speaking at a conference on biodiversity and sustainable development in central Việt Nam and the Central Highlands, Dr. Lưu Hồng Trường from the Southern Institute of Ecology highlighted global innovations such as remote sensing, environmental DNA, AI-based acoustics, quantum computing, and integrated decision-making systems. The Spatial Monitoring Reporting Tool (SMART), already used by over 60 management boards across 33 national parks and reserves, has improved patrol efficiency and data accuracy in forest protection. Meanwhile, Vũ Văn Thái of GreenField Consulting reported successful use of UAVs (drones) to monitor endangered species like the Delacour’s Langur and elephants, cutting field study costs by up to 50 per cent while providing higher accuracy. Other experts emphasised the importance of data-driven management. At the Chàm Islands Marine Protected Area, the Reef Cloud and AI-based monitoring tools have improved coral reef assessments. However, biologists urged the creation of a shared national biodiversity database and faster approval for new monitoring technologies. Participants agreed that technological innovation is vital for effective conservation and sustainable ecosystem management in Việt Nam. — VNS (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
