INDONESIA’S NEW MICRO-HYDRO PLANT EXPANDS TO EAST SUMBA
The newly inaugurated Wairara Micro-Hydro Power Plant (PLTMH) in East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s clean energy transition. Indonesian Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Yuliot Tanjung, highlighted that the 128-kilowatt facility, powered by the Pakuhuay River, now supplies electricity to 105 local connections, including homes, schools, clinics, and places of worship. This access has enabled economic and social activities such as ikat weaving, home-based production, and evening education, transforming Wairara into the first village in the region fully free from darkness. Previously dependent on costly diesel fuel—up to IDR 20,000 per liter—the community consumed around 62,000 liters annually. The shift to micro-hydro has reduced electricity costs to just US$ 0.03 per kWh, easing financial pressure on residents and local authorities. Managed by a Village-Owned Business Entity (BUMDes), the plant ensures sustainable operations and empowers local governance, reinforcing long-term energy resilience and community development.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/1938252/indonesia-s-new-micro-hydro-plant-expands-to-east-sumba (ICE GIACARTA)
