FTA ECOSYSTEM: FOUNDATION TO BETTER LEVERAGE TARIFF PREFERENCES

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam is developing a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) ecosystem to help domestic producers and exporters maximise tariff preferences and enhance global competitiveness, officials said at a workshop on Monday. Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyễn Sinh Nhật Tân said the initiative aligns with the Government’s directive to strengthen integration capacity and accelerate trade growth. Việt Nam has signed 17 FTAs with over 63 partners, including major new-generation agreements such as the EVFTA, UKVFTA, and CPTPP. Despite these gains, many Vietnamese firms — especially SMEs — struggle to fully utilise FTA benefits due to limited information, weak access to finance and technology, and challenges in meeting rules of origin and technical standards. According to Ngô Chung Khanh, deputy director of the Multilateral Trade Policy Department, the proposed FTA ecosystem will link producers, distributors, logistics providers, associations, and government agencies to foster information sharing, coordination, and sustainability. The model is expected to expand export markets, attract foreign investment, and support Việt Nam’s transition toward green and sustainable growth. At the event, Việt Nam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade signed an MOU to boost cooperation and optimise FTA benefits, reinforcing bilateral trade and sustainable development goals. — VNS (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
