INDONESIA PUSHES $10 BILLION COAL-TO-DME PROJECTS TO OFFSET RISING LPG DEMAND
Indonesia inaugurated the New Ethylene Project of PT Lotte Chemical Indonesia in Cilegon, a strategic petrochemical investment valued at US$3.9 billion (approx. Rp 62.4 T). This is the country's first Naphtha Cracker complex in 30 years. However, the plant's operation will cause domestic LPG consumption to spike by 1.2 million tons annually, pushing total consumption close to 10 million tons by 2026. Given Indonesia's heavy reliance on LPG imports (6.89 million tons in 2024), Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stressed the urgent need to accelerate investment in coal downstreaming into Dimethyl Ether (DME) as an import substitute. Six DME projects, totaling Rp 164 trillion, are targeted for development starting in 2026.Source: https://industri.kontan.co.id/news/ri-punya-pabrik-petrokimia-baru-konsumsi-lpg-bakal-meningkat-hingga-10-juta-ton (ICE GIACARTA)
