UNESCO GENERAL CONFERENCE ADOPTS DRAFT RESOLUTION PROPOSED BY VIỆT NAM

At the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, a draft resolution proposing the launch of an “International Decade on Culture for Sustainable Development” was unanimously adopted. The initiative, co-authored by Việt Nam and supported by 71 countries, calls on the United Nations General Assembly to consider launching the decade, ideally for the 2027–2036 period. The proposal received strong backing from the UNESCO Director-General and member states, aligning with UNESCO’s post-2030 strategy to integrate culture into sustainable development policies. Ambassador Nguyễn Thị Vân Anh, Việt Nam’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, highlighted that the initiative aims to emphasize culture’s essential role in fostering sustainable development, strengthening global cooperation, and mobilising resources for the cultural and creative industries. UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture Ernesto Renato Ottone Ramirez said that if approved by the UN, the initiative would ensure the continued integration of culture into the UN’s global development agenda beyond 2030. This marks Việt Nam’s first major initiative at UNESCO in years, reinforcing its leadership role and contribution to global cultural policy. Once officially endorsed, UNESCO will coordinate the programme’s implementation across the UN system. — VNA/VNS (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
