MAJOR NEW HOSPITAL OPENS IN BASRA
The Basra Governorate has inaugurated one of its largest healthcare projects -- the new Specialised University Hospital -- a 15-storey, 446-bed facility fully funded by the local government for the benefit of the University of Basra.Governor Asaad Abdul-Amir Al-Eidani officially opened the hospital in central Basra, describing it as a "medical and educational landmark" and a testament to the collective effort of the city's residents and institutions. He praised the university's longstanding contribution to Iraq's medical expertise and thanked former governor Dr. Khalaf Abdul Samad for laying the project's foundation.The governor emphasised that the hospital was completed entirely by Iraqi engineers, contractors, and graduates of the University of Basra, showcasing national capabilities in delivering large-scale infrastructure. He also announced that five additional hospitals in Basra are now complete and will soon begin serving the public.Project OverviewConstruction of the Specialised University Hospital began in 2012 but was halted in 2014 following a cabinet decision to suspend public service projects. Work later resumed under the provincial government's initiative to revitalise critical infrastructure.The hospital consists of five main buildings (A-E) and includes:A basement level with car parking, kitchens, service rooms, and 13 elevators.Ground floor: radiology department and two operating theatres.First floor: laboratories, administrative offices, and an intensive care unit.Second to fifth floors: surgical, ENT, maternity, and paediatric wards.Floors six to eleven: general patient wards.Twelfth and thirteenth floors: doctors' accommodation.Fourteenth floor: restaurant and dining facilities.Fifteenth floor: helicopter landing pad.With a total capacity of 446 beds, the facility is now the tallest and most advanced hospital in Basra, combining healthcare delivery with teaching and research functions.
