MEETING ON PROGRESS OF BAGHDAD METRO PROJECT

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani on Sunday chaired a meeting to follow up on the latest measures and steps taken regarding the implementation of the Baghdad Metro project. The meeting was attended by the Mayor of Baghdad, the head of the Iraq Development Fund, a number of advisers, representatives of diplomatic missions, international companies interested in joining project consortia, and representatives from local companies and the private sector. The session included presentations by consulting firms Oliver Wyman (United States) and Systra (France) on the master plan and economic vision for the project's routes.Prime Minister Al-Sudani stressed that the Baghdad Metro is one of Iraq's most strategic transportation projects, supporting all sectors of the economy. He reaffirmed the government's focus on developing transport infrastructure as a foundation for growth, including the expansion of urban transport networks, congestion relief initiatives, and construction of ring roads. He noted that new residential cities such as Bismayah, Al-Jawahiri, and Al-Ward -- comprising hundreds of thousands of housing units -- will be directly connected through the Baghdad Metro, making it a vital link for urban development.Al-Sudani further explained that while the metro project has long existed in planning, his government has updated its routes, engaged expert consultants, and reviewed consortium bids that were previously rejected for technical and financial reasons. He said the current stage aims to reach an agreement on the most capable consortium to execute the project, affirming the government's openness to reputable global firms and investors. The planned Baghdad Metro network will span 148 km across seven lines and include 64 stations.
